In the photos you can see two very similar models, one is adapted to a 4 chunks intersection and another to a 2 chunks intersection, both models having 64 sugar cane placed. With a flying machine that can be turned on or off with the obsidian lever and a collection system with minecarts and hoppers that takes everything to a dispenser so you can make a single storage from many modules and that can be connected with water paths, or alternatively remove that system and just place chests as in one of the photos to have a storage for each module.

I attached two schematic files, one if you want the 2 chunk design and the other for the 4 chunk design, remember to check the photos where the location is shown with respect to the chunks.

Regarding the blocks, you can replace the leaf blocks with any block that does not stick or move due to slimes, for example tiles, pumpkins, honey blocks, obsidian, furnaces, etc.
